In Africa, names are traditionally significant and often reveal a lot about an individual. Many factors play a role in the naming of a child (e.g., day of birth, order of birth, time of birth, events surrounding birth, ancestors, etc.) and can give insight to a person’s character, identity, destiny, and more. A name is EVERYTHING! A naming ceremony is an event to celebrate the birth of a new baby with family and friends. During this event, the baby name is announced, and the significance of the name explained. There are diverse ways to perform naming ceremonies throughout the Continent of Africa; however, Daughters of the Root typically performs naming ceremonies like the Yoruba tradition where the destiny of the child is also inferred.
